"One of the most important books of the young century"-Marc Lamont Hill

Black Single Mother is a heartfelt, deeply vulnerable look at a group of women largely maligned by society-at-large, inviting readers to look past the stigmas and stereotypes to recognize the critical role that single Black mothers have played in American society since chattel slavery. The author explores her own experiences as the child of a single mother and a single mother to her own daughter, how pop culture and politics taught her to view women like herself and what the world owes them. She also speaks to 21 other Black single mothers to highlight the beauty, complexity and diversity of their motherhood.
